Six Ways to Improve your Life

At the Oxford Healing Centre, in Oxford, Witney, Abingdon and Woodstock, we work with many people who have a range of fears, worries, self confidence issues, depression, who are looking help to tackle their own personal issues.

So much research exists into how the mind affects the body and vice versa that we will be posting a more detailed information page on simple things you can do yourself that may have a powerful positive effect on your life.

While we get round to that here are six things that you can do that will help you become happier, calmer, more confident, and have a more positve outlook. Add them to your life as a lifestyle change so that they become a regular part of your daily living.

In no particular order:

1. Exercise at least two or three times a week. The beneficial effect of exercising for a whole range of conditions, especially for depression, anxiety and learning is now increasingly proven and has dramatic effects.

2. Smile more. Practice smiling. Wake up each morning and make an effort to think of something positive that makes you happy. Through the day practice smiling to others. It raises your mood and will give you back, happy smiles from others, (although definitely not from all!!).

3. Meditate. Make time to quieten your mind, close your eyes, and practice coming to the space between your thoughts where there is no thought. The more you practice it like anything the more calmness you will bring into your life.

4. Practice gratitude. Consciously write down 10 things you are grateful for in your life. When you get to 10 easily write down 20. Turn practicing gratitude into a habit. Give thanks every day for all you have. (As time goes by you can begin to give thanks in advance at the start of the day for the day ahead and appreciate the day that has gone at the end).

5. As a corallary to this STOP COMPLAINING. Most people spend much of the time complaining. The more you complain the more unhappy your life will be. (It is of course perfectly acceptable to ask someone to do something better, or change what they have done, or do it in a different way. The point here is that the more you complain the more you mentally filter out all that is good and replace it with a thought process that all, or much, is bad, ultimately at your own loss.)

6. Visualise. The power of visualisation is increasingly being proved to have specific and positve effects on your mind and your body. See the last post on David Hamilton’s book “How the Mind Heals the Body”. Use visualisation if you are ill, worried or depressed. Use it to visualise new responses to events or situations where you want to change the way you act.
