Change Your Life

At the Oxford Healing Centre through hypnosis using hypnotherapy, Emotional Freedom Technique, Reiki and Life Coaching we work with many people from Oxford, Witney, Abingdon and Woodstock who have a range of fears, worries, self confidence issues, and depression., All of our clients are looking for help to tackle issues that they feel are holding them back from being the person they want to be.

While getting the help of trained and skilled practitioners at the Oxford Healing Centre is important there are a number of things that everyone can do to make a positive difference to their lives through making small lifestyle changes.

There is considerable research into how the mind heals the body but also how beneficial regular exercise is for the functioning of the brain, as well as the body. On our contacts page we are developing a reading list for anyone interested. However below are some simple ways that if added to your life will have a positive effect for you.

Here are just some of the beneficial effects that you may experience by incorporating all or some of these things in your life each day include: Increased feeling of relaxation; happier; less stressed; a greater sense of control; increased mental abililities; calmer; greater confidence and feeling more positive.

What they all do is help to give you a greater feeling of control over your life, and that you are not and dont have to see yourself as a victim or descend into the worst aspects of yourself in response to events.

Here therefore are six things that you can do that will help to enrich your life.

In no particular order:

1. Exercise at least three or four times a week. The beneficial effect of exercising for a whole range of conditions, such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks, addiction, and stress is now increasingly proven and has dramatic effects. Exercise has a major positive effect on how the brain works effecting your emotions and intellectual capacity. One of the best books on the effects of exercise is Spark by Dr John J Ratey and Eric Hagerman.   In discussing the beneficial effects of exercise on depression they state “Exercise regulates all the neurotransmitters targetted by antidepressants. Exercise immediately raises levels of norepinephrine which helps improve self esteem. Exercise also boosts dopamine which improves mood and feelings of wellness and increases motivation and attention. Another natural chemical produced by our brains is serotonin which is equally effected by exercise. It helps stave off stress by counteracting cortisol, and plays a vital role in regulating mood, impulse control and self esteem.”

The more regular exercise the greater the beneficial effect you will feel.

2. Smile and laugh more. Practice smiling. See our News page for the results of a public research experiment to see how beneficial smiling is. Choose and practise waking up each morning and think of something positive that makes you happy. Practice smiling to others.

When you smile the muscles at the corner of your mouth are activated which are near the part of your brain that releases serotonin. Smiling releases Serotonin into your blood stream so when you smile you release feel good horrmones which raises your mood and lifts your spirits.

3. Meditate. Make time to quieten your mind, close your eyes, and practice coming to the space between your thoughts where there is no thought. The beneficial effects of meditating now has huge amounts of research associated with it. By meditating you bring an ever increasing sense of peace and stillness into your life. Connect with the higher self so that you not only can ask questions but by stilling your mind, hear the answers. Like anything the more you practice the greater the positive effects.

4. Practice gratitude. Being miserable makes you ill. Vast amounts of research shows that those who are optimistic and have a positive outlook are happier, feel more in control of life, enjoy life and are more engaged in it. In one study those who were unhappy, complained and were the most miserable were more than three times more likely to die of disease than those who had an optimistic and positive outlook.

Consciously practice being grateful. Write down 10 things every day you are grateful for in your life. When you get to 10 easily write down 20. Turn practicing gratitude into a habit. Give thanks every day for all you have. (As time goes by you can begin to give thanks in advance at the start of the day for the day ahead and appreciate the day that has gone at the end).

5. Stop Complaining. Complaining is corrosive. Our thoughts and attitudes inspire our actions and our actions create our world. So what kind of world do you choose to want to live in. That choice is literally yours.

The more you criticise, run down, and complain the more you mentally filter out all that is good and replace it with a thought process that all, or much, is bad. The primary loser in this is yourself. Many studies now show that people who do not act in this negative way are happier, longer lived, and enjoy life more. Will Bowen’s book A Complaint Free World is an excellent starting point.

6. Visualise. The power of visualisation is increasingly being proved to have specific and positve effects on your mind and your body. David Hamilton’s book “How the Mind Heals the Body” is an excellent book on the beneficial effect of visualisation. Use visualisation if you are ill, worried or depressed. Use it to visualise new responses to events or situations where you want to change the way you act.

From David Hamilton’s book he states as follows: “When you visualise what happens is that you actually change the structure of your brain. What you think and what you visualise causes real and structural changes in your brain.” You in effect are creating your own map of the world. If the world you see is one that causes you to feel predominately happy, confident, calm, loved and loving then you probably dont need to make too many changes. But if that isnt the case then the inspiring knowledge from vast amounts of research is that the choice is yours.  You are responsible for how you think and feel.

If you want a happier, more peaceful life, with greater self confidence add these things to it and see how much difference it makes.

If you need more help come to the Oxford Healing Centre for support. Whether you are looking for Life Coaching, Reiki, Hypnotherapy or EFT for career and life changes, emotional problems, increased confidence or spiritual healing, we can help.

The purpose of life is for you to be the best you can be.  The Universe is abundant and the only limits in our lives are those we impose on ourselves.
